Yes we did this. Just write a kind email and say due to circumstances you have to go in another direction but you enjoyed the time getting to know the school.

I would say have the child write and articulate why. You are always allowed to change your mind but you have to also own the change and show respect in doing so.

Of course, but keep in mind some schools keep records of that. So if you have younger children that want to go to her former #1, they may have a harder time. And if she changes her mind after a year and reapplies next year, she’s less likely to get in. But if it truly is a better fit, email her former #1 and thank them for their time and consideration.

My child applied to 4 schools and got into all of them. During the application process, she had a clear favorite and we told the school that. During admitted students day, she changed her mind and her #2 became her #1. We have told her to sit on it and make sure she's thought it through for herself, but her new #1 is significantly more prestigious, closer and a slightly better fit. Can we change our minds after we told the school that it was her number 1?
