I have a freshman DS and know of at least two other freshman kids in our area that he knows that are regularly and heavily vaping and using pot and drinking. Parents seem clueless. I’d immediately revoke phone and all screens. Homework is done on device in kitchen. Regular sermons on smoking and how horrible it is. Important to let them know they made a mistake and that’s ok, but they need to own up to it, accept accountability and stop. This is young to be headed down this road. Next stop will be pot and drinking, you need to nip this in the bud.

To the poster that said better supervision. These are 14-15 year olds. You can’t supervise them all the time.
My kid at 13 ate a gummy at a friends house. I had no idea there were gummys there. I know the friend and the family well.
I agree with the poster about the presentation/essay. Mine would lose her phone as well for a while.

I honestly wouldn’t look at it as punishment for doing something wrong but as a potential health crisis to be addressed. You don’t ground people for drug addiction if you want to solve the problem and nicotine is super-addictive.

Not true. How did you find out? This matters.

We found out freshman year because our kid told us. They were skipping school and doing it during advisory time at his friend’s house near the school. Or they would do it right near the school after dismissal. Taking his phone would not have stopped either of these.

We did room searches and backpack searches for a long time, without notice. We obviously prevented him from hanging out with these people outside of school when we could allow it. They were on a sports team together so it wasn’t that easy for the season. We had him drug tested at the doctor.

We were glad our kid at least told us. It was a rough year. He didn’t do anything socially outside of school for months.

I'd take the phone indefinitely and there would be a good old fashioned grounding. You go to school, you come home. And if DC is an athlete you tell the coach why the kid isn't at practice.
