Just want to make sure everyone knows that private school deposits are due before the lottery results come out. For some schools that is 10% of tuition which can be close to $6,000. That's a lot of money to throw away for a back-up option if your preference is an application school.

If you have a boy EOTP, Gonzaga and St. Anselm's. Girl options are more limited.

DCI also gives some preference (6th in its waterfall of preferences) to an older sibling/applicant with a younger sibling who has an offer to a DCI-member elementary.

We are IB for Eastern, and we would definitely go there if we didn’t get into a select HS, and may choose to go there over a select HS based on my kid’s preferences.

Even my friends who have kids in private struggle to think of girls options. We’re friends with a lot of Parents with kids at TCS are not sure it’s worth it (the intensity level is up there). There are good Catholic options but it’s a long way if you’re EOTP.

This. The private schools are just so far if you have a girl. Even with a shuttle or carpool, it's a lot of time for the kid. Unappealing to pay that much and schlepp that far. We kicked the tires on this question pretty thoroughly for DD1 and ended up moving IB for BCC.

I would try for both Latins, McKinley, or the Eastern IB program.

McKinley. Ellington. Eastern. Maybe McArthur, but it's far if EOTP.

Boy's Catholic school. (If we have to.)

Some of the private school options run a bus to some locations in DC. That can make a school much more doable.

We are IB for MacArthur and it's in our neighborhood, so we are going there.

McKinley Tech, private (not sure if thats a backup but it is also in the mix), the IB is itself a backup. Some people do the oob lottery to MacArthur but I dont think thats clearly worth the commute over our IB.

St John’s, Gonzaga, and St Anselm’s. We’re in an immersion track and DCI is more than good enough though.

We have a 7th grader and are starting to think ahead for next year. We don’t live in J-R school district and our in boundary isn’t an option. If you don’t get into one of the more highly regarded schools (walls, Banneker…), whats next on your list? Do you have another selective high school you’d be happy with, and if so, which one and why? Are you applying to private? Would consider moving?
