Burke will give extra time accommodations. My kid doesn’t get extra time but they have commented on how the teachers plan for both regular and extra time students to be able to finish a test during a particular class period.

Burke has been extremely flexible with our kid’s accommodations which are mainly avoiding loud environments and sometimes wearing noise-cancelling headphones. I didn’t even know my kid was getting advance notice of alarms (like fire drills) and being allowed to leave the building before the alarm sounded. Kid advocated for themself and got the accommodation. I guess extra time might be different.

Not sure about middle school, but for HS, they 100% give extra time for tests. But only for tests. We came from public middle where my kid got extra time for in class assignments as well, and Burke was very clear that was a non-starter.

We had the opposite experience for our DC at Burke in US. We decided to pull. We regret the chance we took. Our DC is at another local independent HS and thriving now.

My moderately dyslexic DD was at Burke from 6th through 12th and it was absolutely the right school for her. It was a great experience. She came from the Lab School.

I have another kid now at Burke with a different learning profile/interests. Also working really well for them.

Burke absolutely offers accommodations. It’s on their website: https://www.burkeschool.org/student-support

You may have heard what you did because these are the same standard accommodations that nearly all DC private schools offer. To get something more intensive/targeted, you’d need to look at McLean or Lab. But based in what you said here, she doesn’t need that much support and Burke could be a really good choice

Burke is hard for middle school as it is small.
For some that is great -for others not so much.

We are a year away from the application process and considering private middle for our kid who is currently in 4th. We have friends who love Burke, but I’ve heard that burke doesn’t offer accommodations. Is this true?

Our kid is dyslexic and, like lots of bright dyslexic kids, she tests as above grade level in all areas, even ELA, when given extra time on tests. That’s really the only accommodation she needs—extra time on classroom tests in order to have the test reflect what she knows.

Thoughts on whether burke could be a good fit? No other academic or social issues—she’s an engaged student and an easy-going kid who just needs a bit more time to read material (but, given extra time, she reads at/above grade level and does well in school).
