I think Daniel Deronda is better, if you want to read Eliot. Dorothea can be a bit frustrating.

One of the greatest Victorian novels. Definitely worth it! I’ve read it several times.

Yes it is is but for me Trollope’s Barchester Towers series is even better (if you’re in the mood for Victorian Vicar content.)

It’s the consummate British novel.

It is so good. Razor sharp wit, great plotting, characters so real and familiar it’s like you’ve met them before. And while some of the characters get shredded under the microscope, Eliot manages to remain gently empathetic

The first time I read it it took some work to get to the place where I was paying enough attention that I really caught onto the fact that I didn’t want to miss a single word. But I got there.

Yes! Have read it twice. It’s not 900 pages to slog through like a chore— it’s 900 pages you get to escape to for a long period of time.

No. Sorry. I'm a hater.

I read it in a college literature class with a professor I liked so much I took 3 classes from the professor. I disliked Middlemarch a lot. The characters and their arcs are tedious.

As calibration, I liked Walden, Moby Dick, all Jane Austen, and Vanity Fair. I do not like Dickens much.

There are Middlemarch fans here. They should be along shortly.

Is it worth 900 pages?
