This and any illicit relationships or porn fetishes that could subject you to blackmail. Polys often focus on those aspects.

You have to give all sorts of info- family, bank account info, job info, etc....

And it takes like 18-24 months. It is invasive and you can't decide not to share something you find private.

My clearance took 6 months which I think is pretty usual.

For a TS? My plain old secret took 6 months and I thought that was amazing.

It’s not as bad as many are making it out to be. The form with the questions is here: https://www.opm.gov/forms/pdf_fill/sf86.pdf

It asks many questions you might see on a government job application, but also has questions about travel history, foreign associations, etc. If you are doing secret, the checking on accuracy is pretty cursory. If you’re going for a TS, they will do more checking, including an interview of you and likely including interviews with some other people. Exactly how much depends on a lot of factors. Once you have the clearance, you have to report certain things like foreign travel.

OP, you tell them everything. There’s no privacy in the process.

I had top secret clearance. They went back to my home state and questioned even my parents’ neighbors.

This. Each of these 4 things is different:

TS without SCI
TS/SCI
TS/SCI with CI poly
TS/SCI with lifestyle/full-scope poly

Which of those 4 might apply will vary with the government customer — and in some cases might even vary with the specific role or with which other organization that the government customer is working for.

OP needs to rephrase the question, probably focusing it or providing more background before anyone can be very helpful.

I have an excellent career record, and just hoping to get to back to work (in a new job with a contractor).

They’ll find out here.

They care about anything that could put you in a compromising position where you could be easily swayed or blackmailed. So they care about alcohol, weed, other drugs and they care how responsible you are with your finances. Those are the biggies.
