I love hydrangeas but my hydrangeas from TJs never last more than a few days.

Thank you for this! I love having cut hydrangeas in the house—whether from my own plants or from TJs—and I have been doing everything wrong!

I’m looking forward to having some beauties in the house this summer and fall.

This is a good article on how to keep hydrangea in water.

PP is correct that you can revive by submerging becuse they can take in water from the petals, but they also (and primarily) take in water from the stem. The challenge is that the cut stem very quicky floods with stick stuff to heal the wound, and that prevents water uptake in the stem. The "younger" the stem the more likely it will happen. When I cut from my hydrangea shrubs in the fall as they turn dark violet, they don't wilt and in fact will dry like a preserved flower once the water is gone because there is less safety flow at this time.

To keep the stem open you can cut it under hot water, or dip the cut in boiling water.

Wow. I had no idea. I don’t have them growing in my yard. Thanks from OP.

To make hydrangeas last, you need to water them from their flowers - so when I bring them home, I put them in the sink filled with water and place a plate on top to submerge them. Leave them for an hour or so. THEN, trim them and put in a vase. If they start dropping, you may be able to receive the with a second soak.

They are weird but beautiful! Don’t know if any other flower that hydrates through their flowers.

I bought two beautiful stems of blue hydrangeas at Trader Joe’s the other day. I trimmed the stems, added the plant food and put them in a vase around 1 p.m. They looked great. I went out to dinner and by the time I was back at 9 they were completely wilted. Very disappointing. What happened? (I often buy small bouquets of other kinds of flowers from TJ’s and they last for a couple weeks)
