I’ve never noticed anyone pronouncing it with an sh. Now I will need to start listening more closely. We definitely say “gro-sir-ee” in our household. Born and raised Washingtonians.

I say it with the /sh/ sound. For whatever it’s worth, I’m from Texas.

Webster’s lists both pronunciations, but the /s/ sound is given first.

Gross ree —especially when I say: groceries.
I occasionally say Groshree when I say: grocery store.


My accent has bits of DC, NYC, CT, and, when I was a child, the influences of lots of adults who grew up in the South.

I usually say “grow-shir-y store” but also “I got grow-sir-ees.”

I think sometimes I do the other way. IMO both are fine.

I pronounce the c as an s, not an sh, and that is always what I’ve heard throughout my life…until now. Now every time I hear someone say the word, they pronounce it “groshery,” and it’s driving me crazy, lol. Which is right???
