Yes, absolutely take her. Girls really should go when their cycle starts. Doesn’t need to be tied to starting sexual activity.

Not true. You really only need to go once you become sexually active or if you are having some kind of problem. Many girls are not sexually active in high school, believe it or not.

Yes…brought my daughter who is now a college freshman. She wanted to go on birth control before going to college which I supported.

Absolutely! Why on earth would having your daughter visit a doctor trigger sexual activity? She needs to know about her health and be empowered to advocate for herself.

My kid went when she got to school. Had an implant put in(even though not active). No periods or pregnancy for her during college. This was her decision supported by me

Sounds like a good idea. I plan on doing this. Or at least letting my DD know that they can get birth control at student health at their school. I remember so may girls with strict parents going straight to student health for BCP in the first few days of school.

Yes, I took my 17 yr old DD to a gyn recently. They just chatted. She is not sexually active, even when I offered for her to go on birth control, she said no. She doesn't want to be sexually active yet. I was super glad she said that, but I wanted to make sure she knew that I would be there for her if she chose to be. I've always told my kids to wait until they find someone that they really love. Gyn gave her some rx for period cramps that help better than OTC.

I know my son had sex with his HS gf (whom he thought he'd marry one day, but sadly they broke up in college), and I know that he uses condoms because I found a new packet in the basement where he was hanging out with this gf.

FWIW, I was a virgin when I started dating DH (at 30). So, it's not like I was promiscuous, but I want to make sure my kids are safe. My parents never ever talk to me about any of this stuff. I was too afraid to be intimate, and I don't want my kids to have the same hangups, nor do I want them to be ignorant of their bodies, STDs and safe sex.

I relied on two forms of birth control but did not go on the pill.

I think it's a good idea for parents to normalize all regular health care appointments. You teach your kids how to take care of themselves.

I think the experience of her walking into the office on her own and having any discussion is what you want. She knows more than you re: if BC is appropriate for her, at this time of her life. It will then be easier for her to do -similar- once at college. Probably easier actually in every way, on campus. Easier access, student/age appropriate focus. I guess it could depend on where she goes to college. We never faced any college options that would have given us concerns.

DD is about to go off to college in the fall. She’s never been to a gynecologist but it seems like the right time. To talk safe sex, prevention, maybe get birth control if she wants it (she’s not yet sexually active).

Does this sound right? Is that what you’ve done for your girls?
