One lesson learned--apply and apply again. My kid did not get into their first choice school when applying in 6th grade from Deal, elected to stay at Deal and applied again for 9th (3rd application to this same private school--applied from DCPS for 6th, 7th and 9th) and got in. There was a lot of this among friends. You often have to apply multiple times.

I would be hesitant to draw too many conclusions from your one experience. At our school, kids got into better privates than I expected them to, to be honest. Maybe it helps they fewer apply than at a Janney, but still, these aren’t unprivileged kids either.

It depends on the private school but most of hte top privates have roughly the same number of spots for 6th and 7th. It's often about 10-15 so it's just a very small number when they have applicants from across the entire DMV and they want to spread admissions across multiple sending schools. For coed schools that is 5-8 spots per gender....not a whole lot.

Is it because 7th is more of an entry year than 6th?

Yes, i'm not sure why but the results from Deal were good and the results from Janney were pretty terrible. At least 8 applied to STA (mine was one of them) and none got in and one that I know of applied to NCS/Holton and did not get in either schools. A few moved to Montgomery Co and a few went to K-8s and that's about it.

Point of my post is that it's not easy to get in to private following DCPS elementary school. There are a lot of kids who try and few are chosen. Kids had better luck from Deal the following year and I wondered if it was because the privates perceive that Deal as being a "rougher" and they're more open to taking them. They don't want to fill their very few "public school spots" (and they probably have some sort of target they aim for in an admissions season) with privileged upper NW kids. Although frankly Deal is only a few degrees different than Janney.

Really interesting observation here. (Meant earnestly, not sarcastically). Bizarre that Deal is seen as rough!

I teach 5th grade at a Deal feeder and what I hear most from families applying to private is they are worried about the size of the school and their child getting lost in the crowd. I’ve never gotten the sense they think it’s unsafe.

About 50% of Mann ES 5th graders go to Hardy (but many kid who start at Mann in PK or K leave after 3rd or 4th).

Look at individual schools here: https://edscape.dc.gov/page/student-enrollment-pathways

Forward view, only terminal grade. "Not in audit" indicates that a student moved or went private after 5th.
