Ok thank you. They are telling me that such an exception is available under BCBS basic because out-of-network coverage is not available, but because BCBS standard has out-of-network coverage (which is 65% of the "plan allowance," which is over $100 less per session than specialists actually charge per session), such an appeal is not available. Which is such incredible BS, because I get reimbursed something like $32 of a $225 session. That is hardly "coverage."

Perhaps if they don't allow for an exception up front, I will appeal the benefits at the back end to OPM. Not sure how that works.

What's your out-of-network deductible? Every BCBS plan had an insanely high one, and only the 65% of the plan allowance will even get credited toward the OON deductible.

I’m not sure if this is the same thing, but I do know people who have gotten single case agreements. The provider has to be willing to be a part of the agreement and it’s a fair bit of work on your end: https://www.theprojectheal.org/single-case-agreements

Welcome to the land of the uninsured. Just suffer like the rest of us or pay. Most suffer.

That’s pretty much always the case for mental health care with any plan. Poor in-network coverage and very low out of network reimbursement.

Here is an online course offered by the Mayo Clinic:

If there is an in network provider it’s highly unlikely though agree that rules are sometimes bent if you make a big enough stink.

GEHA has better mental health coverage. Too bad the administrator (united0 couldn't come to agreement with JHU.

Welcome to "coverage."

Let me say you should do CBT-I regardless. I actually did it myself using a $35 PDF! But having a therapist to help is good too.

Not exactly the same, but I had success appealing a denial of coverage under BCBS Basic when the in-network hospital had out-of-network doctors. If I recall correctly, I successfully appealed the denial to OPM, with a letter expressing lots of outrage.

Has anyone had success with federal BCBS standard option (not basic) getting in-network coverage for a specific therapy (in my case, CBT-I) when there is no in-network provider available?

I’m being told that because the standard plan provides (terrible) out of network coverage an exception is not available, but I am not accepting that answer.
