NP here. I don't know about WashU but Case's CDS makes them sound less concerned with DI than I think they actually are in real life.

Wrong. Dean J explicitly says sending materials they didn’t ask for and emailing individual UVA reps slows the process down and shows you can’t follow instructions.

Plenty of ways to show interest without uselessly harassing overbusy admissions reps.


You really don’t get it. If the school wants interest, show it. If they don’t, don’t. This isn’t a game where your job is to find a secret code. Seriously, give it a rest.

I would not take a school's word at its face value. For example, WashU says it doesn't track demonstrated interest, but I suspect that it might be used as a tie-breaker. Also, when one clicks on a link to an email from all these schools that say they don't, the browser brings one to a temporary website for a second -- forgot the name -- and then immediately goes to the linked school website. This temporary website logs the click, which may or may not be used, but if it's just a few clicks, why not do it?

I took my kid to tour a couple RD targets/safeties February senior year because there was no other time/opportunity. Not sure if that moved the needle re: demonstrated interest but it helped them get excited about those schools.

Uh, nobody is talking about sending in materials. Demonstrated interest includes campus visits, virtual info sessions, opening emails and clicking links, etc.

Some schools don’t release their acceptances until late March. If it’s one of those schools then I imagine it might not be too late. I would suggest having your kid email the local/regional admissions person and ask a casual question to show direct interest if possible.
