Does anybody know which are good destinations from DC on Virgin, approximately how many points are normally needed to fly, and what availability of reward flights is like? Thanks.

We used them for IAD to LHR several times. The lowest I’ve seen it is 10k points one way.

6K if you're lucky.

Also if you book premium economy with points sometimes you can auction for business class seats. I think I had paid 140k points for two premium economy seats to India flying through Heathrow, and then $450 each for business class seats on the IAD to London leg. It was high season and even economy tickets to and from India were $2000 one way.

Econ - $100 PE - $300 Up - $400 IAD to LHR one-way. seems reasonable still.

Here is their award seat checker - you can see the entire year of availability and the point values: https://www.virginatlantic.com/reward-flight-finder

With fees like that, not sure that's much of a deal at all. I looked on some dates in March and you can fly SAS with a short stop in Copenhagen to Zurich for under $700 for regular economy (including a checked bag). Now if you got that for summer yes it's a good deal.

Without getting into the specifics, it's important to compare apples with apples. Award tickets are fully refundable and changeable, with a small fee at most. They usually have a full luggage allowance. So many of the cheap cash tickets have restrictions that put them into a different class.

They had a similar promo last year with Amex and I got two flights to London for a ridiculously low amount of points. Still paid about $1k I think in taxes/fees, but I figure coach tickets would have been more.

They seem to have very reasonable mileage prices for flights, but hoo boy do they have pricey taxes and fees!

That’s Heathrow. Always high fees even to transfer.

Wrong- incoming flights and flights which only connect at Heathrow to outside the UK don't incur the high UK taxes:

Virgin Atlantic puts huge surcharges on their awards- its just essentially a reduced fare. BA does the same thing, but theirs are less and they actually have reduced them a bit the last few years.

You can make an account at Virgin and start searching. Virgin of course only flies to London from Dulles, but then they have a lot of long distance connections from there like to India. You can also get some partner awards like on Air France, but those have less availability.

I have never flown Virgin Atlantic but there is currently a 40% boost to transfer points from Chase Sapphire. I want to figure out whether this is worthwhile.

Does anybody know which are good destinations from DC on Virgin, approximately how many points are normally needed to fly, and what availability of reward flights is like? Thanks.
