Gonzaga has had a significant increase in applications in the past few years and had its highest yield in the school’s history last year. I went to an all girls’ school in another city and admission also has gotten much more competitive in the last few years. So, the two single sex schools with which I’m familiar are not following that trend. But, it might be the case at other single sex schools.

All the schools are fully enrolled every year, so doesn’t that mean that the same number of kids are choosing either option as in any past years?

Of course! I mean that the students who are ACCEPTED to single sex schools like Visi/GZ are turning them down because they go with a co-ed school instead. These are amazing schools and I am not trying to belittle them, but when talking to parents and teachers, there has been a notable switch the past few years. I’m sure there are other factors involved like commute, extracurriculars, cost, etc., but curious because this was not the case 10 years ago.

More students are seeking a traditional high school experience that co-ed schools offer.

For Catholics, co-ed schools can offer the same rigorous opportunities as single sex schools.

Interesting. This is definitely not the trend at our k-8 school. Nobody who gets into GZ or Visi will be turning them down for a co-ed, I can guarantee that.

Interesting. Ours had several!

Some of the co-ed’s offer a wider variety of activities and classes that single sex schools do not have. Huge reason. Some students want a mix of genders that reflect the real world. Another huge reason.

Approx 99% of high school students in the USA attend coed. Presumably there are more reasons for this than just that.

Ten years ago, it seemed like most 8th graders in DC’s school were choosing single-sex high schools as their first choice but I’ve noticed a shift towards favoring co-eds. Is this part of a larger trend in the area? Are co-eds more popular with today’s young people, or does it fluctuate year to year?
