Plenty of time to raise the SAT, but even if not, recruited athletes with 1520's get into MIT, especially for football or basketball.
Depends on lots of facts that we weren't told like academic rigor including highest math class, what class the B was in, SAT math score, awards in sport/which sport, etc.
To get a 3.9 UW, a student would have 3 B's. Not one. Which isn't by itself an automatic bar to MIT, but it does need to be balanced by something in the app.

Unless he's good enough for D3, and even then the chances aren't good. MIT coaches pick carefully, because they're looking for kids they think they can get through admissions. I think the 3.9, and the lack of leadership, would turn them away. But if they decided to take a chance, MIT admissions rejects about half of athletes with coach support.

First, does he have the coach's support? If so, it depends how high his math SAT score is (790/730 would be good), what the sport is, his personal athletic stats and if he's an all conference athlete, and how he compares to the other athletes with the coach's support.

It’s difficult for this profile (normal high stats, mid ECs) to get into a top 20, much less MIT.

A girl from DC’s private schools got in as a recruited athlete. High test scores, but not top 10 percent.
Interestingly, the top student in the grade (who is not an athlete) was deferred.
