If I see the the grifting without the abuse, I only assume that a) it hasn't been revealed yet or b) the grifter has lacked opportunity so far.

This is a genuine, non-snarky response: In my limited experience in this world, I have observed that the venn diagram of these characteristics is pretty damn near a circle:
-spiritual guru
-qualifications exaggerater (e.g., spoke once at Oxford union becomes "visiting professor at Oxford")
-sexual abuser.

I am not going to pretend to understand why, but I encourage you to look around at your real-life social circle and at media. If a person has the first two characteristics, you can be damn near certain that the third will be uncovered eventually.
