We rented a car last year and drove about an hour south from Cancun. Didn’t get pulled over. My husband is white and I am brown.

You don't rent a car at the airport and drive off with the telltale big sticker on the car identifying you as a tourist. Hire a driver.

Well one way is not to rent a car. You can just use transfers/tours.

Bribe, or la mordida, a concept so deeply ingrained there that it has a specific name. That's just part of the culture of corruption there, take it or leave it. I choose to leave it, but it seemingly doesn't bother many people who find the cheap food and lodging to outweigh the unreliable government, public safety, and other considerations many people prefer over cheap vacations. Different people, different values and priorities.

The entire country? I'm a very cautious person, who is white and doesn't speak Spanish. I went to Puerto Vallarta for three days and walked around the Malecón by myself, went into restaurants, convenience stores, took taxis, all with no problem. I probably picked up ten words each day I was there. Saying an entire country (that's not at war) is unsafe paints with a VERY broad brush.

Cancun was created for tourism. If you stay there, I would definitely visit other nearby areas. Otherwise it is USA 2.0.

Yucatan is not that unsafe. Mexico is not a monolith.

If you look at the data, the Yucatan had the same or lower murder rate than the US.

There is more to see and do in riviera Maya, cenotes, ruins, the water parks, etc. compared to Puerto Rico but both are great and the resorts are fancier for same price.

If you want AI, Cancun.

Both are safe, but safety is relative to what you consider "safe". (We live in PR. Many people cancelled trips here after Venezuela.)

Is Cancun and river de mayo all inclusive better than Puerto rico resorts? Does Puerto Rico have any all inclusive?
