I just did this - moved from a client facing consulting role to an internal marketing position.

I worked for a large county government and knew several people who did this. It's worth a shot.

Yes you probably have a lot of transferable skills and can make that pitch, bringing up your new education goals, when you interview or apply for the new role.

I work for a similarly large Fortune 500 and some people move departments 1-2 times in their long careers with the company.

I did this. Worked at an internal role in a bit consulting firm and became a client server. I’m really glad I did it but ultimately returned to the internal role for better WLB. And I went back at a much higher level so the money was the same.

I’ve seen people move to HR, or from clinical to management (I did this, got a role that required my license but was admin, then got additional training to move up to exec level).

Has anyone successfully moved to completely different departments/fields within their employer if you work at a large org with let's say at least 10,000 employees? I'd like to go back to school for a certificate and eventually a second masters in another area but stay with my employer because I like the org, benefits, culture, etc, and there are a lot of opportunities there. I'm not looking to make a drastic switch, like from HR to astrophysics, but let's say from office management to public affairs or accounting to IT. I'm sure my boss wouldn't be thrilled to hear me express this, but maybe supportive as they often ask the team to consider what they want to do next and how they want to grow and I've seen others there switch areas. I've doing the same thing for ten years-- let's say, marketing-- and would like to get out of it and move into HR. I'd like to enroll in a few classes to get those on my resume, and it would be great of course, if the org supported this knowing I'd like to stay. Any advice?
