I am looking to preserve capital and increase returns in an environment where the dollar is being devalued but US companies continue to overtake ex-US ones in the race for global capital. 🥸

They will of course take your yen and promptly convert to it to US dollars to make the SP500 buy. (Reverse on the sell). So you will go through the currency translation twice, incurring the associated fees.

But technically, you can tell your friends you invested in the US market using JP yen. I am sure they will be impressed.

Thanks, I'll try this.

Yeah, I think you've found the secret. This is what the smart money is doing.

Why the Yen? Japan has been fooling around with the same kind of loose monetary policy as the U.S., causing similar instability and weakness in their currency and a junk run-up in the Nikkei over the past 5 years. I guess they got tired of waiting around for a real rally so they made one up by copying our homework.

Why not increase your currency diversification even further and just put maybe half your money into an international ETF that is unhedged?

Why not demarcate it in Vietnamese dong? It's a more stable currency pair with USD and if you have kids <10 they will think it's hilarious as well.
