What do you mean by "still on the roster"? If we're talking about D3, they would likely remain on the team, but not necessarily be included on the roster that is posted online during the year that they are abroad. They would also preserve a year of eligibility that they could use in grad school.

This is all dependent on the coach. If the coach is good with it…then no problems. If the coach is not good with it, then assume her playing days are over unless there is a huge spike in injuries or something else dramatic where the coach has no choice.

My kid plays UAA baseball and it’s OK to go abroad Fall semester…but if you miss a baseball season, then assume you are done playing.

Usually they go at a time when it won't interfere with the sport.

Are they allowed to go for the whole year? My DD is a recruited athlete (D3) and can only go fall semester because she plays a spring sport. She is not at the school yet but plans to go abroad fall of junior year.

If you’re a solid player, I believe they usually hold a spot for you and then you come back and the year off doesn’t count toward your NCAA eligible seasons. As long as you don’t play elsewhere during that time or for an overseas pro team.

I imagine she’ll keep her spot in DIII.

On my kid’s D3 soccer roster, yes. 90% of the juniors are abroad right now and all of them are still on the roster and will rejoin team activities when they’re back. They have workout assignments while abroad and are expected to find a local school/club team to play some soccer with there, too.
