Nope. I have to beg my mom to wish my kids a happy birthday. The last few years she’s “forgotten” to mail cards.

Nope, yet always complains she never talks to them. I remind her she is free to call, but then she claims she never knows when we are available... Super annoying.

Why would a child get so upset at FaceTime? A little bit odd

FaceTime is boring for kids. You're expected to stare at the screen and fake happiness and interest. Kids can only do it for so long. In addition grandparents who live far often don't have a close relationship with kids, meaning there's nothing to talk about, so that both parties just end up staring at one another and then grandparents complain that nobody is talking to them.

My parents call.

My in laws don’t unless they’re instructed to. Then they complain that they never talk to my kid (she’s 9). It’s ridiculous. She has a Tin Can phone, so she has her own number. They have that number. They just consistently weaponize incompetence.

My mom and my kids text. Kids send Grandma pictures of things she would enjoy. Mom would probably love phone calls but is happy to text.

My in-laws text them and my parents call them once a week or so.

My parents don't call and after calling for 13 years I dropped the rope. There were also FaceTime demands, whereas they just sat there and stared. Super uncomfortable for everyone, me and the kids. They also wish happy birthday to my kids through me, a 3rd person, even though kids are teens. And then they wonder why there's no relationship? Sorry, it's not my job to develop your relationship with your grandkids.

My kids had no living grandparents by the time they were in college.

However, when I was in college and beyond, I was the one who called my parents and my grandparents. It was more practical, as I had the more erratic schedule.

My kids love to talk on the regular phone but that’s not on“enough.” I wish our parents just called the kids.

My parents and grandparents both won’t call us. They think phone calls should always be initiated by the younger generation.

OP and same here. I was curious whether this was universal.

My parents (especially my dad) call my kids and my kids call them. The oldest, 20, has always been the best at it, the other 2, 18 and 13 aren’t as good. I’d say weekly.

Kids are in college, my parents will text them for birthdays, but probably not much else

Do your parents expect the grandkids to reach out, or the reverse? I wonder if there’s a generational divide as far as duty (if any!) to stay in touch.
