VT, like many schools, does give an advantage in housing selection to those who confirm earlier. Makes sense.

NP. For engineering, architecture, and probably a couple others, most kids would choose VT over UVA. Only if you think you might change your major or if you come from a low income household where UVA tuition is much cheaper than VT would you choose UVA over VT for these subjects.

I thought that VT was cheaper, not a factor for us, but isn't VT cheaper?

It is unless you are low income. UVA doesn't give much merit aid, but does give a lot of need based aid.

Once again: VT has a wealth of majors available for students to switch to if they decide against engineering. My own DC started in engineering and then switched to a liberal arts major at VT. Having a fantastic experience.

I'm all for the shorter drive, but I have less influence with my younger one than I did with the older one.

Yes, I want to start buying the gear. The kid doesn't seem too worried about it, getting the acceptances was the big thing.

I'm assuming there are IG groups going hot and heavy with kids looking for roommates. (I'm not on IG, but I assume that is where they go.) Not that it matters that much, a random roommate selection probably has just as good a chance of working out as a social media contact.

Not 100% sure, the kid hasn't even been to UVA for a visit, just wanted VT, going for engineering.

VT is the choice, but we were planning on going to the admitted students day at UVA to at least check it out, but now we're having second thoughts. Are there benefits to confirming a college choice earlier? Better housing options I'd assume. Anything else?
