I am in a government role with a 175 member “office” and I like the quarterly newsletter for the following:

- wedding pics
- baby pics
- who left/died/retired

If someone who actually likes books or movies has a review I enjoy that too.

If you’re not reading a book, don’t include a book.

What are you doing in your personal life that sometimes makes you consider things differently at work?

Are there periodicals you read about your industry that you recommend for people to read to understand more about the industry? Example, Skift in the travel industry.

Are there things going on in other industries that makes sense for your industry? For example, I heard the CEO of Taco Bell speak recently and he mentioned getting influence from Apple product releases for Taco Bell.

Any topics in Harvard business review that look interesting?

Basically be authentic. Don’t just pick a book because it feels like you’re supposed to pick a book.

OP here. Thanks for the feedback. This is actually very well received by teams of my peers in the same role, and it’s actually what people want. If the sentiment on DCUM is per the last few, I also will not spend time on the thread so no need to reply further.

I'm an avid reader, but something about this just rubs me the wrong way.

It's also putting a work bent on a hobby. I have this new CEO who emails us his thoughts on personal stuff and it comes across as weird.

I just wouldn't do this.

That’s really off-putting op. I wouldn’t do it.

No one wants or needs a monthly team newsletter. Anything that is in that newsletter is either old information, or something non-urgent that the team doesn't really need to spend their time reading. Please rethink your communication strategy.

Why would I want book recommendations from someone who doesn’t like to read? That’s like getting restaurant recommendations from someone who doesn’t eat out. How about focus on the actual work related aspects of your job?

If you don’t like reading, why put this on yourself?

What about recommending a podcast (video or audio)?

I am stuck on wanting to include a personal recommendation for work/self-improvement books in each issue. Not a book club per se but “what I’m reading” in case it inspires others.

The problem is that no one has done this for me and I’m not an active reader. Side note: I plan to listen to the audio book version.

Seeking your book recommendations to consider for my new newsletter corner. Thank you!

Will they be tested on or required to demonstrate that they have incorporated/applied the techniques in the required reading, or will other performance metrics be applied? Just make sure the material has been validated and HR/legal is on board to ensure the employment acts are defensible.

Nope! Just a heads up that the boss is reading something. No follow ups, no questions, no gatherings or discussions.

Adam Grant’s books or Grit by Angela Duckworth?

OP did not mean to offend anyone and I’m sorry that’s what you took away. I mentioned because I would only consider a book that I can listen to - I do not intend to physically hold a book. Audio is not available for all books.
