DD admitted ED to Swat this cycle. Strong private , 1st in class at end of junior year, 800 verbal/730 math; 2 varsity sports with sportsmanship awards in each; school wide leadership position, and STEM ECs relevant to proposed major.
Wanted small school near city.

My kid got into Amherst ED as an unhooked non-athlete last cycle. He did have perfect stats but other than that, I can't explain it. Amherst does accept 1-2 kids from his school most years, so they do seem to like his school well enough and ED did probably help him stand out.

But are you still supposed to ED even if chances are minuscule so they can see during RE round that you did ED?

From DS’ class there is one unhooked girl in ED at Swarthmore (white, full pay, from competitive state and city, private school). I don’t know her stats but she was considering EDing to ann ivy and DS thinks of her as one of the top students so I’d guess they’re strong. It’s the perfect school for this kid, we’re excited for her. No other ED wasp admits this year but Wesleyan, Middlebury, NYU, Smith, Emory, RISD, Northwestern, and an REA to Yale.

We are seeing the same in our area. Only a few recruited athletes.

If you exclude hooked students including legacy, URM, and FGLI, you are taking fewer than 50 students ED at each school. That includes internationals.

W and P especially hard ED from our school. Unless you're an athlete. Wiliams might take 50 unhooked kids ED. 50!

Or stats for those who were or weren't admitted?

The only unhooked kids I've known to get in ED1 (or ED2 for SP) are ones with Ivy-level stats who decided to ED to a WASP instead of entering the Ivy scrum. Otherwise, I do think RD outcomes are usually at least somewhat better.

The conventional wisdom for WASP schools is it's extremely hard to get in unhooked ED. Also students strong enough to get in often shoot for Ivies first, then let the rest play out in RD.
