I think that in your case, the answer doesn’t matter. You are questioning already, your nervous system is telling you everything you need to know about trusting this person. Trust yourself!

Cutting ties with this person completely would mean losing a business relationship with a third person who is wonderful and I think likely has been lied to by this person. So while I agree with you, particularly because this document could have been sent WELL before it was needed, I would love to have proof they lied. I will have to decide if I care enough to go to the post office though. It seems to me completely crazy they would have done this.

Do you mean you're looking for proof of wrongdoing so that you can start a direct business relationship with the third person? You'll have to go to the Post Office.

Ask your letter carrier if they may have crossed out the stamps. Many years ago, I received mail once or twice that had the stamps crossed out with a pen. I thought that our letter carrier had crossed the stamps out when he noticed that the stamps hadn’t been cancelled.

It’s also likely that the post office took a day or two longer to deliver the mail. USPS takes longer to process and deliver mail than it used to for years now, even locally.

I looked because I initially assumed it was sent, but not as early as they said. But now I am wondering if they realized they had messed up and placed it in my mailbox instead. If they straight up lied I would like to know and no longer interact with this person ( who was well aware I needed the document before the day it arrived). Is there any way to know?

Sometimes the post mark doesn't show.

Sign up for informed delivery with USPS for the future. You get images of most of what's coming.

It will have a barcode usually on the back, in light orange, if it went through the postal system's sorting machines.

OP and I think so too. I would love to know for sure though because this person has been incredibly disorganized and that has caused problems but this would be the first indication of an outright lie and I would like to say something if I had proof.

You can ask the PO for your own peace of mind, but honestly at this point, it doesn't matter to your relationship whether you have proof or not. This person is unreliable, period. If you can at all avoid it, you should stop relying on them. They can mad if they want, you don't need to explain or defend yourself.

You could bring it to your local post office and ask whether the envelope looks like it might have passed through their hands.

Hand canceling is suspicious.

I am not normally a suspicious person but I had a dispute with someone recently about whether they had sent a document or not. They forcefully started they had mailed the document several days earlier. When I arrived home that day, the document was in an envelope in my mailbox, with stamps that were crossed through and no post marks of any kind. I looked because I initially assumed it was sent, but not as early as they said. But now I am wondering if they realized they had messed up and placed it in my mailbox instead.
