UVM bugs me — if using first letters, it should be UV, if using state abbreviations it should be UVT, but I guess they wanted to use syllables and come up with UVM.

If you don’t like UGA then you also don’t like UMD.

There’s a lot of states where the flagship gets an extra letter that’s unnecessary to outsiders. UMO, UNL, UTK. No one OOS thinks of any location other than Orono, Lincoln, or Knoxville. UTK especially annoying because the K in Knoxville is silent.

Right? So many people assume it’s Catholic!

Army-Navy

Army has theee options - it's the United States Miltary Academy (USMA), which is located in West Point, so often called West Point. Or just Army.

Navy is the United States Naval Academy - USNA, or just Navy.

people here use VT for Virginia Tech which is state abbreviation Vermont

People here also say VTech and no one is confused that they mean the electronic toy company (despite snarky comments to that effect). I doubt UVM avoided using UVT to prevent confusion. After all, USC (CA) and USC (SC) are thoroughly confusing and they don’t care.

I’d like to nominate St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a state school located in St. Mary’s County, for most misleading school name.

UC is generally taken by California, so of course Colorado uses CU

Having the U before or after isn't that big of deal

UVM is based on the Latin for University of the Green Mountains, Universitas Viridis Montis

“Vert mont” is two words in French. And UVM is located in a historically pretty francophone area. Nearest big city is Montreal.
