For my lot in Fairfax County, the survey very clearly shows that the land starting from the curb and including all of the sidewalk belong to VDOT. It is NOT my sidewalk. It is NOT the case that the sidewalk is an easement on my land.

Separately, there is no law, ordinance, or rule in Fairfax County saying I need to clear any sidewalk. It simply is not my responsibility.

Further, that sidewalk is disconnected. Even if it were clear, one could not walk to any bus stop or even to the next street via that sidewalk.

Last, I have a heart condition that an ordinary observer is unlikely to discern. Doctor's instructions are to avoid all forms of heavy labor.

People need to relax about sidewalks.

A groups of folks with regular shovels won't cut it. I've been chipping away at my husband's car for a week, now. It's solid, and has already broken one shovel.

You just need a metal garden shovel or spade.

OP, you're also welcome to adopt a road and sidewalk all by yourself. It's free.

Who said anything about trying to adopt a road and sidewalk?

Uh, OP?

Sure can....Can we get a hashtag for those who can shovel their driveways but not the sidewalks on their property?

Kids are walking on the road to and from school. If they try walking on the freezing rain sidewalk and if something happens, sue them.

No one cares about kids OP. They really don't. It's personal responsibility and parental responsibility until it comes to their safety, of course then its community and what do I pay taxes for outrage.

Cant raise taxes to ensure we have a functioning society for all persons.
Cant shovel the sidewalks because incapable/lazy/etc.
Cant pay for it because of reason a-z.

The city and county personnel are unable because they are clearing all lanes so people can drive safely to and from their driveways (which is somehow always shoveled even if their sidewalks aren't) to their workplace and/or businesses that they expect to be shoveled so they dont fall. And if they do, they sue.

I will also add the adopt a road is a sham. When have you seen picked up roads in this area?

Why don’t you call the group that adopted the road you’re concerned about and ask them? Posting a vague question here won’t do anything.

If a group has adopted a road, can't they assist with shoveling sidewalks so kids can safely walk to school and to bus stops?
