WSB ain’t what it used to be. Very much the puppy mill of dance studios these days.

BalletNova is still very good. CityDance just opened up a new location in Falls Church and they inherited some students and I believe the AD from Alchemy Ballet out in Herndon, which was opened by some of the Kirov teachers when it closed.

Top notch instruction, really technical focus.
Wont get all the bells and whistles of being in THE NUTCRACKER in DC, but their production ms are manageable for our schedule and still magical for the kids.
They only have a few seniors each year, but they often go on to dance or to great schools otherwise.
They are an offshoot of the defunct Adagio Ballet (but not the previous owners!)

Thank you! You mean Virginia Dance Conservatory, correct? This is one of the schools I’m looking at. Is their program director present and involved in everyday classes?

As for Adagio, I’m not sure why they closed, but I believe DAV is also an offshoot. Do you know if the conservatory has a similar approach to DAV?

Sorry, yes, Virginia Dance Conservatory in Arlington. The two founders are very involved, still teach classes, etc.

I am not familiar with DAV, so I can’t answer that one!

Adagio closed at the beginning of the pandemic. Not sure the official reason, but probably would not have closed how it did had the pandemic not happened.

Thanks!

Thank you for your answer. Yes, I saw that, but it looked like the information was from a few years ago. I’m trying to gather recent opinions, as many things can change.

Hi everyone — looking for honest recommendations for strong ballet schools in Northern Virginia.

We had a mixed experience at Dance Academy of Virginia in the past. At the time, it felt disorganized, and recital preparedness wasn’t what we hoped for. It felt like a money-making machine — the focus seemed to be on putting kids in beautiful costumes on stage, but without them actually developing real skills. We ended up leaving.

Later, we heard they hired a new artistic director with strong experience, and we were told things were improving. We even considered rejoining. However, I recently learned that this artistic director has already left after a short time, and the school returned to previous leadership, with the rehired artistic director working remotely from another state.

So now we’re hoping to find a studio with:

• strong technical training
• structured curriculum and progression
• well-prepared recitals
• visible, hands-on leadership
