That seems insane to me. We are going to check out Bromwells. They carry Heat N Glo, which I've heard good things about. Not only was the Winston's quote really high, the guy who came by to check things out, and who sent the quote, sent some pushy follow up messages saying "I would love to have a conversation with you about why we need to do this work." That's AFTER I made very clear we are not going to pay anything like that, nor proceed anytime soon. They may "need" to sell an $8000 fireplace but I sure don't need to buy one. I found that off-putting.

Bromwells quoted us about $9000, and we have a gas line already. It felt too high to me so we passed.

Anonymous wrote:$14,000 two years ago. Or $20,000 if you count that we had to get a new electrical panel in order for it to pass inspection. We got a Mendota insert.

Honestly, it's the only upgrade I've done to my house and my favorite part of my house. It's super warm. We put it on a smart temp setting and keep the fireplace on like 6 months a year.

What? That is insane. Did you already have a gas line to your home?

How is your gas bill ?
The gas bill is why mine is never on.

Wood stove insert might work better for heat and cost.

Not all direct vent fp are equally good at warming a room.

My direct vent has a sealed pipe (with openings only inside the room) that runs through the firebox. Cold air goes in the bottom vent. Then the pipe inside the firebox is hot and heats the air. Heat rises, so warm air cones out the top. Because pipe is sealed, no fumes or air contamination.

Also, mine uses D-cell batteries to turn on/off. So we can use it even if the mains electric power is out (downed power line or whatever).

There potentially are two pieces to this if a house does not yet have a gas meter in place:

1) Pay gas company to run natural gas line from street to the gas meter for that house.

2) Pay some contractor to install piping from that gas meter to the fireplace (or furnace or appliance) and install the actual fireplace.

Additional FYI: I just looked up the direct vent fireplace they recommended online, and it retails for $4200 from places like Woodland Direct. Don't get stuck paying a $3500 markup.

We already had the gas line run, but there was an old burner set we needed to replace. I think it was like $3800 total for new burner, remote, log set, receiver cover, and stone stuff that goes at bottom. We used Bromwells in Falls Church and liked them a lot.

This stretch of cold made me realize how chilly our den can get. It has a wood burning fireplace, but i want to convert to gas for convenience and heating efficiency. If you got this done, how much did it cost? I think I'll need to run a gas line to the house also.
