If you are interested in Revolutionary-era history, I'd check out the https://virginiahistory.org/virginia-250-passport sites. I've only been to Kenmore recently but know from others that Ferry Farm is nice. Fredericksburg also has a cute downtown and many of the sites are there and have combined ticket options. Then battlefield someone mentioned is easy to get to also.
If you are into military but not Marines-specific, there's also https://www.thenmusa.org/ in the other direction, but you don't have to go all the way to DC.
Thanks to everyone who has responded. I appreciate the tips.
To the question of what we are interested in: military history especially WWII, any kind of museum, natural and historic sites including non-military. Cute downtowns are great too. So the answers are right on track.
