+1 from a teacher mom with kids at a private school.

Mom of kid at an independent school here; if I knew this was happening I’d contact HOS immediately. You have a cultural problem at your PTA, OP. Please speak to your HOS. And thank you for all your efforts for our kids. I truly love the teachers at our school. You deserve better.

This. Our PTA doesn't ask for any funds from teachers except we do ask them to become real members. That costs $15/year. Of which a few dollars go to national PTA.

We stock the teachers' lounge with free food at appreciation events. And every teacher gets a $25 gift card at the winter holidays

So no teacher is out of pocket due to PTA.

No ask the parents to contribute.

It's definitely not appropriate.

But I also wouldn't assume all the PTA moms are rich. I'm sure some are, but the assumption that parents all make more than teachers is common and not true (some are teachers themselves - although a teacher would not make this request!)

Just band together and don't sign up for anything!)

The first sentence of the post says she’s at a private.

This has to be a mistake; it is so laughably inappropriate.

Can you reply all to the google doc and sincerely ask if this was sent to the wrong people?!

I’m wondering if a) it was sent to you all to show you what you’ll be setting up or b) one or more teachers did ask what they could bring and pta mom sent it out so they could add to it.

They’re not expecting only teachers to provide the food, are they???

It was made very clear that we are meant to purchase the items. We were not present when the PTA moms planned this.

That's insane.

Why isn't the PTA providing?

This is in no way the teacher's job or responsibility. Financially or otherwise.

I'm a teacher at a private school that is not in the DC area.

I was wondering if people could offer their opinions on this.

The teachers who have grade 12 homeroom/advisory have been asked to come to school a little early to help set out a special breakfast for the senior class. In addition, today we received a Google doc with a list of ingredients and breakfast foods, as well as a place for a name to be entered beside each item. The PTA asked that teachers sign up for an item, which we are supposed to purchase and bring to school for the breakfast.

This really rubs me the wrong way. I am poor, and the moms of the PTA are all relatively wealthy. I just don't see how this group of moms somehow decided that the teachers, who were being required to come set out and serve this special breakfast for the 12th graders, should be asked to spend our money on the foods for the breakfast?

Am I being unreasonable about this?
