Cross field and Fox Mill are both good schools, but houses zoned to them are in a totally different price range than those zoned to Dogwood or Forest Edge. Dogwood and Forest Edge are both Title 1 schools, the only ones in Reston I believe. Forest Edge is about 65% FARMS, while Dogwood is around 82% FARMS.

Of the two, Forest Edge is ranked higher and has the benefit of having a well established and strong AAP program (it’s one of the oldest AAP centers in the county going back to the G&T days) and the program is easier to get into than most of the surrounding schools. The school has many challenges, but far fewer than Dogwood. I’ve spoken to many teachers who worked at Dogwood and they’ve all mentioned how hard it is to do any actual teaching when so many of the kids are dealing with things like food insecurity, gang activity in their neighborhoods, and even homelessness. The students who don’t require as much support are often overlooked since staff is so overwhelmed.

Fox Mill would object to that. I don't know if Fox Mill is considered Reston or Herndon, since it is technically not in Reston or Herndon, but we are pretty happy with the school and are most certainly in the Reston/Herndon community space.

But we like being a smaller, neighborhood school with strong academics. I know some folks are not happy with the IEP services at the school but our experience was positive. We have friends who have not had positive IEP experiences for different reasons. The Japanese Immersion program was great for us. I know that not everyone loves the JI program, kind of like the AAP Center AAP/non-AAP split issues.

Anyway, just tossing out that Fox Mill is here, literally 5-10 minutes away from Crossfield and Dogwood.

fox mill has a herndon address. where would you say its located if not herndon?

Technically, Fox Mill has an Oak Hill address, just no one uses that. Fox Mill is not in the City of Herndon. We are a 5 minute drive from Reston Town Center. I would say that most of the people in Fox Mill see themselves as tied to both Herndon and Reston but we have to pay to use both entities services.

If someone is looking at Dogwood, then Fox Mill is a 5 minute drive from Dogwood ES. You cross Fox Mill and you are in the Fox Mill neighborhood. I would guess that Fox Mill is closer to Dogwood then Crossfield.

Oak Hill--as is almost all of Crossfield students. Yes, it has a "Herndon" address, but the area also is just as close to Oakton, Reston, Fairfax, and Chantilly. In fact, Crossfield students border most of those more than Herndon.

Fox Mill is not a Reston school.

Hunter Wood is comparable to Crossfield, academic wise, because of the AAP. But I know the population is much different.

Definitely forest edge. FEE is a B, (SOL pass rate in the 70s%) Dogwood is an C or D. (SOL pass in the 40s%)

Since most of the students at Crossfield do no live in Reston, I would hardly call it a "Reston school."

Forest Edge, most definitely. It may not be as strong as it was before Aldrin and Armstrong became Level IV schools, but Dogwood is one of the worst schools in FCPS, certainly the worst in the northern part of the county. It’s a very sad situation. Most families zoned for dogwood who have even the slightest amount of means opt for private or pupil placing at other nearby schools.

Looking at 2 houses that are zoned for either forest edge or dogwood, can anyone give me details on administration, teachers, student behavior?

Thanks
