Is this an annual event? Look it up on Facebook for pics from last year. I went to a "gala" a few years ago and was overdressed. These ladies wore business casual or those plain Calvin Klein work dresses.

+1

Save the floor length gowns for the opening night of the season at the Kennedy Center. (Oh ... wait ...well, you get the point about where to wear the ball gowns).

If cocktail, any recommendations for bricks and mortar store in the DMV? Asking for a 60 yr old friend.

Macy's at Tysons has a vast amount of cocktail dresses.

I’m short and formal dresses that don’t require sometimes 12 inches hemmed off are hard to find in store.

Op here
This is my problem too I dont want something I have to tailor … all gowns are super long on me.

Just wear a cocktail dress and it will be floor- length ball gown on you

This. If it's a work type event, association, trade industry, weekday, post work etc, people will be in cocktail or even LBD, even if it claims to be "gala".

If it's a nonprofit fundraising event in the suburbs that people are attending voluntary, people will typically be more dressed up.

I get you because I would also prefer a formal dress to a gown. Often you can find photos from previous years' events online. I would look there to see how formally everyone is dressed. Sometimes the invitation will also have dress suggestions.

Dh and I have a gala dinner end of the month.
Is an evening gown a must or a nice formal dress is ok as well?
(I would prefer a dress)
Thanks
