But seriously I have gone to gyn with abcesses on my labia and nobody gave me a herpes test.

Nurse practitioner who works in an STI clinic here – yes, of course she can decline any tests that she doesn’t want done. An experienced set of eyes might look at what she has going on and be able to give her a sense of what it probably is/isn’t. Herpes testing itself is fickle, the swab (best test) has to be done at the right time or you can have a false negative. The blood test just tells you about lifetime exposure to type 1 or 2 (most adults have been exposed to one or the other) and does have a non-trivial false positive rate.

She would rather live in ignorance?

OP, the thing is, there are drugs for herpes. Anti virals with virtually no side effects. She might want to know. And the most effective way to test for it is a swab when you have an active sore.

Anyway, yes, I would imagine you could say no to a swab test. And it doesn't really matter that she has only had one boyfriend. He could have oral herpes and given it to her that way. He could have had PIV sex with someone else and contracted herpes that way.

Not at all - why? She would only use protection anyways. Getting a diagnosis for a teen that has no cure is a lot to deal with. It’s not even a standard test.

Yeesh, usually you have to beg the doctors to give you a blood text to look for antibodiies for hsv 1 and 2, why on earth wouldn't your college age kid be able to handle knowing her sti status?
