They don't want to open. Our principal asked parents to send pictures of snowed in driveways and places where there was compacted snow so that they could send it to the board. We sent a picture of our perfectly clear sidewalk and road. Take a look at the PGCPS groups on Facebook. I don't know what flexible job or no job these parents have but they're definitely vocal about not opening the schools...

They are signaling virtual learning until every kid can safely go to school. Unfortunately the county told people they dont have to shovel until the 4th so now the sidewalks are completely compacted.

At the very least, PGCPS should be split into North and South county for weather related issues.

Is the board meeting open for comment. People who feel strongly that they need to open schools need to show up and speak up.

A lot of the sidewalks along busy roads are businesses/municipal responsibilities.
I think that the buses would make it in our neighborhood.

Traffic will be absolutely terrible tomorrow if they go back on time.

I wish they would offer a hybrid option for those kids who can get to school safely.

There's an emergency board meeting where they will discuss virtual plans. They literally said they won't open until every student teacher or family member can make it to sch and home safely.....

40k kids walk in PG. Wanna know how many have sidewalks the entire way? Wanna know how many crossing guards are not at busy intersections daily?
Wanna know how many cars go 10-25mph over the speed limit where kids are walking? Kids arent safe walking any day and YET the schools are open.
Why doesn't the count think giving 10 days after a storm to shovel sidewalks is acceptable? I haven't seen ONE house where the sidewalks were not shoveled along with the driveway. Every single one has the driveway shoveled but not the sidewalk.
There's a very vocal contingency that wants pg schools closed until it's 80 degrees out.
Virtual is not a long term (>3 day) option. It's scapegoating education. The more we rely on education to be solved by technology the worse our outcomes will be.

Gonna go out on a limb and suggest that the number of people without cars is likely smaller than the number of people who can't quit their jobs to stay home with their kids for two straight weeks.

They will open on Wednesday, due to the shame of being the only school district that closed on Tuesday, regardless of whether buses can get into neighborhoods. Prepare for alternative solutions to schoolbuses. MCPS is opening on Tuesday with a stark warning that some buses might not make it.

Wow it really does sound like they plan to wait until the snow melts. This is unreal. Surely driving your own kids to school is easier than having them home all day.

If they can tell me that people have been cooped up in their homes all week and haven't gone out to eat or shop then sure but come on. They can drive their kids to school. Sure, some parents don't have cars but that's the minority. Walking also an option. Most main roads have been cleared. If we wait until the last bus can go on the most remote road we'll be here until March.

On the one hand, I don't see how they could have gotten the buses through my neighborhood.

I grew up in Prince George’s County, and we were always one of the first districts near D.C. to reopen after a snowstorm. I graduated high school in 2006, and I remember years with a ton of snow—like 1996 and 2003—yet schools still opened as soon as possible.

Now it’s a joke. I honestly don’t know what happened. I thought my kid was lying when he told me school was closed. I even said, “Boy, you hacked into the system.” I ended up calling Oxon Hill High School just to make sure no one had been hacked and that they were actually closed. They laughed and said, “Nope, we’re closed.”
