I have learned that I use 10 gallons of water for a quick shower, and about 40 gallons for a full load of laundry.

Well, since I'm a teacher, still home for this extended ice-break, I have had some time to hyperfocus on my water usage for some reason.

Never really paid attention to it before. We are charged twice on the water we use. Once, for water coming in, and then a large rate, for water going out to the sewer (they assume whatever water comes in goes out.)

So if we use under 80 gallons per day of water, the rate for 1000 gallons (water in, sewer out) comes to $17.05
If we use 166 -275 gallons per day, the rate for 1000 gallons will be $23.08. (That's the rate I was at the past year).

I've been checking usage now daily and have gone from using 100 gallons a day down to 80 gallons per day (this is with no adult children in the house) and that's just by paying a little more attention to habits.

I have a spreadsheet to calculate how much I am spending daily on water+sewer. It went from $1.93 per day to $1.54 per day. (down from more like $4.00 last year)

So that is motivating!

I've received some crazy high water bills this past year, but I only just began paying attention to it (I'm using a budgeting app now to track expenses and I'm trying to find ways to cut back everywhere.)

I've been checking my water meter every time I do a load of laundry and putting into a spreadsheet. Our usage was averaging 250 gallons per day for the past year. This is for between 3 and 4 people since we have college kids, one who lives with us but often stays elsewhere; one who is away at school but home for summer, breaks, long weekends etc.

We do not water our lawn much in the summer and don't garden. I do believe we had a small outdoor hose leak over the summer and once I fixed that the bills definitely improved.

Last month I purchased a new, very efficient dishwasher and that has also had an effect. We are down to 150 gallons per day now, or 100ish gallons if neither kid is home. We still have an older washing machine, top fill, that uses between 12-40 gallons per load, depending on small/med/large. I think we do 4 loads per week when it is just my husband and I; the kids add another 1-2 loads depending on what's going on.

Buying a more water efficient washing machine isn't in my plans right now. I am trying to decide if installing a low-flow shower head would be a good idea. I'd like to get our usage to below 80 gallons per day. Also wondering if it would make a difference to put in low flow aerators to our sinks for dish and handwashing?
