Agreed on this. The people I know who applied to both were under pressure to apply to one or the other. In which case, you should always choose the school you genuinely want to attend.
Once Einstein wrote recommendation letters for a few junior scientists to an opening at some university. When that university asked why he recommended a few different people at the same time (“Why wouldn’t you just recommend the best?”), he was like, but I recommended them for different reasons!
You can like two totally different schools for different reasons 😉
