In state, choose Michigan. Out of state, Georgetown.

I wouldn't pay $80K per year for OOS, even for Michigan (which is an amazing state school, probably the best in the country), but that's a personal choice. I'd choose smaller classes over football, but I concede that the unifying force of football is cool.

Once Einstein wrote recommendation letters for a few junior scientists to an opening at some university. When that university asked why he recommended a few different people at the same time (“Why wouldn’t you just recommend the best?”), he was like, but I recommended them for different reasons!

You can like two totally different schools for different reasons 😉

there are only two lecture halls that large at UVA they seat only 400 for intro courses.

Plus, be prepared to freeze your a$$ off in Ann Arbor. It gets cold there - man.

Having a freshman at a large state school (UVA) and knowing many freshman at Michigan I would choose Georgetown. It's been frustrating trying to get classes and my kid doesn't like being in classes of 100-500, kids interacting only with TAs, etc. The state schools give you the rah rah of sports but you're definitely a cog in a wheel. I'm realizing the benefit of going to a private school. My older kid is at a top20 private and their experience has been very different: small classes off the bat, relationships with professors are easy, etc.

Depends on cost and major. If cost is the same and its not engineering or CS then Georgetown because of prestige.

There are many threads on this if you search. As someone who had this choice many years ago, I went to Michigan because I was in state. I wanted Gtown more at the time, but I wanted to save my parents $. I had an outstanding time in Ann Arbor and no regrets. What I notice is that Michigan has steadily become more well regarded as colleges become increasingly more difficult to gain admission. People used to somewhat patronizingly say "ohhhhh, that's a really good school" and now they seem genuinely impressed with the credential.

I would say the choice depends on the major, financial considerations and the type of school culture that would best suit your child. Either would provide an excellent education and well position your child for a top grad school or career outcome. Good luck!!
