I think it is important to point out good things that teams are doing, but in my neighborhood, both girls and boys were out.

Are you saying that in your neighborhood there were no teenage girls shoveling?

We had a younger neighbor who was out shoveling aline. It turns out her husband threw out his back shoveling.

My son and 2 of his buddies who had just finished their own yards noticed her by herself, walked down and struck up a conversation, and cleared her entire driveway and mailbox in short order, without accepting payment.

There were lots shoveling in my area of Vienna, both their houses and helping others. They have been out all week.

I mean, I (a woman) did too… but the point was that the OPs point was that boys/men (as they traditionally have done), did more of the work load, and so let’s appreciate them. We can appreciate boys too- and it’s not less but MORE important considering rising toxic masculinity.

My boy and his friends shoveled an extra spot for my disabled kid’s therapist after the snow became ice and I was also eternally grateful.

What area was that? DH & I had to dig out some elderly neighbors myself because nobody else did it and I was afraid they’d starve if they ran out of food and this next event hits worse than expected.

And plenty of young men over here, no help forthcoming

The teen boys and young men in this area deserve a huge thank you for stepping up to the plate for their neighbors and community this past week.

Boys everywhere were out there in the cold, hacking through the ice for hours, helping elderly neighbors, often for free or without being asked. Our neighborhood had a text thread going around, blasting out which elderly neighbors needed help. One mention of a house, and boys showed up. The work was backbreaking, yet they stepped up to the plate everywhere I looked, and in other neighborhoods too, based on social media posts. The boys were pleasant, hard working and happily helping their neighbors without complaint.

This area is often eager to criticize boys, particularly teen boys. Our young men deserve a collective thank you for their contributions to our communities in the aftermath of this storm.
