Based on my experience, There is no screen use in the lower grades. In the upper grades, screens are used sparingly and only after students have completed their assigned work. At that point, they may use screens for enrichment activities such as practicing math or reading (for example, SplashLearn).

Also, You won’t see those huge monitors that you see in every DCPS classrooms.

A lot has changed for the better and we’ve had in kiddo graduate (now at DCI) and have a second child in upper elementary. Great community, solid changes, and teacher turnover has stabilized. Is it perfect? No. Is any school? No. We’ve been happy with teachers who care enormously and teach life skills and global citizenship in addition to the basics.

What are some of the changes you've been happy to see? What are some things you wish were different but can live with?

+1 and agree about teachers at MV8 where my kid attended. So dedicated and really care about the kids. It’s not just the teachers either but also all staff from front desk to kitchen, Great team at the school.

My DC had some very light Spanish exposure in daycare but has had zero in DCPS PK3-PK4, so I worry a bit about whether they will feel totally lost getting dropped into immersion as "late" as Kindergarten. Based on how many K seats they have, it must be pretty common, but all the threads on here seem to be about entering in PK.

It's fine. MV takes in a lot of kids in K and I don't think they would do that if it didn't work okayishly. Of course only you know your own kid.

Post in your neighborhood parent Facebook group. A lot of people will be willing to chat. FWIW we have been happy at J.F. Cook. During the time that parents were protesting, both my kids had excellent teachers and were doing well. I had close friends with kids in the grade that imploded and am very familiar with the challenges, just want to point out that it was not universal.

We’ve got 2 kids at MV8. We like the school and really like the direction under the new exec director and her new leadership team. Do you have specific questions?

Go to turkey thicket playground after school when the weather gets better if you are interested in MV8.

We're curious about Mundo Verde but can't make any of the Open Houses. Wish they had done a mix of times. Is the Open House essential or mostly marketing? What are other ways we could get to know the school(s)?
