It’s mostly for gate keeping information. They don’t want everyone on the team to know who or how many are trying out, which might make current players get nervous and start trying out elsewhere. The club will string along current players as long as possible. Not an issue for starters but the borderline players won’t know their future until later depending on if someone better comes along during tryouts.

Current players don't need to attend because they have a spot on a roster in the club. You should have an idea if your DC will stay on the top team or get moved down. If you don't, have your DC talk to the coach and ask for feedback. If your DC could get moved down a level, start attending ID sessions at other clubs.

If the club told current players not to attend, you should listen and not be that parent.

It makes sense if you have limited field space so you can focus on the kids you dont know.

I have never seen this at any club - ever. Plus, coaches view ID sessions as a chance for an additional practice for existing players - or at least a chance not to lose an additional practice.

Of the current players won’t be there it isn’t really a tryout. Just a box checking exercise.

It’s all pre determined. They don’t need to do a comparison. That’s the reality.

Every training session and every game during the season is an ongoing trial for the existing players

What is a one day session going to tell coaches that they don't know already?

Usually they have the new players attend a practice.

If the current players aren’t attending the tryout, not sure how the club can fairly assess new players.

At our big club, they are "strongly encouraged" to attend ECNL ID sessions to compare the new to the club kids that are trying out, but they know ahead of time if they are at risk of dropping down. So, it's kind of just a formality- they aren't actually trying out.

I noticed that my DC’s club this tryout season for the first time isn’t requiring current ECNL players to attend formal tryout sessions. Is this typical?
