Raspberry Pi is a good option but for an older age child. It is just a small, affordable Linux computer. It includes a web browser and free alternatives to MS Office, so it has much more than just Python.

As with any computer, kids and teenagers ought not have access to the system administrator ("root") account on a Pi. Also, think carefully about whether one wants that (or any other computer) connected to the Internet.

“Python Pocket Reference” by Mark Lutz might be a handy small book to have in hand. It is not a tutorial, though. It is just a reference for the Python language.

From Scratch, Python is a reasonable choice for next programming language.

If you’re lookkkg fo a summer camp, TIC. Both my kids learned to program there and thought AP Java was a breeze in HS.

My kids went from Scratch to programming classes in middle school.

I remember hearing good things several years ago about both Raspberry Pi and Lego Mindstorms, but I don’t have direct experience with either, and one or both may have been replaced with something newer.

My kids used scratch Jr from MIT media lab. I don’t recall helping them much, at the age of 8. They were able to go to the website themselves and teach themselves but there are programming places that offer courses for a fee too.

What school is she at? Ours offers after school classes, like through Panda Programming.

My DC9 is interested in learning more about how to program. DC has learned how to use Scratch and used that at camp, but now wants to move into something more advanced.

Any recommendations for online resources that might help him. Most of the things that I found online were geared towards adults or older kids or were too basic/similar to Scratch.
