In this case, I think it's worth seriously considering it. I'm the PP whose kid did the online camp. My son submitted his paper to NHD, and he's writing another paper this year. Also loves history and reads a lot outside of school. It's tough to balance with sports and schoolwork, but he loves it. Older DS also competed in NHD throughout high school (without a lot of school support) so happy to answer any questions about history research and NHD.


My child also did just submit an essay for our local NHD and it was a lot of work but he really enjoyed it. Also plays a sport and busy with school work. Without school support for NHD or other historical essay contests, I just think he could benefit from some guidance in subject exploration and writing. Thank you so much for your comments!

There should be an end goal if you are going to spend 2 weeks of the summer and that much money! You don't go and get nothing out of it.
