Some take Hon Physics or more typically AP Physics 1 alongside Hon Chem in 10th so they have more room for the double period science APs later.

AP Seminar is a 10th grade class. There are 2 versions available and each school picks the one they offer. AP Seminar 10 is considered a core English class. AP Seminar is considered an English elective and students must still take a core English class. Many of the skills taught in this course are repeated again in AP Lang which makes 11th grade English easy.

Doesn’t it make sense to take Honors Physics and Chem both in 10th?

My DC will be taking Health and a PLTW class as 10th electives. If your DC is interested in a STEM AP for 10th perhaps AP Comp Sci Principles would interest them.

Comp sci principles is a dog of a class and the only reason anyone takes it because it satisfies th stupid Maryland tech requirement. AP Java is a slightly more useful class but does not satisfy the tech requirement.

What other APs can be taken in 10th besides APUSH? Or AP comp sci?

Churchill parent here again. Kids here take APUSH (or Honors USH) in 9th, then can take AP US Gov in 10th.

Mine did Honor Chem and AP Physics 1 in 10th.

I believe AP Java does satisfy the tech requirement now. This is at least what we were told at Churchill. If it turns out it doesn't, we'll have him take something else in one of the remaining years.

My kid's using his 3 electives on WL 5, Band, and AP Java. Plans to take Health over the summer. He's considering engineering, so I think it makes sense to take an AP CS class (he is currently taking Computer Programming 1.)

If you’re figuring out how to cram STEM classes to get all 3 science APs as well, take Honors in the summer, and/or request that at least one pre-req be waived. This is what my kid did. They skipped Honors Bio, and did Health and Honors Physics in the summer. AP Bio and AP Chem are double periods, so hard to fit in with other courses unless you finagle a bit.

That’s great your kid’s school offers AP Science and WL classes. How would this work with IB courses? Some are 2 years

I don't know about IB, you might need to ask your kid's counselor. But science is more advanced in the AP curriculum (and writing in general and Humanities may be better developed in the IB curriculum).

One of mine did both but that’s unusual. He’s basically taking 3 years of AP physics because he really likes it and wants to do engineering. He also loves chem so did honors chem 10th and AP chem 11th.

Most kids do chem in 10th grade — that’s what my two other kids did.
