Loudoun proposed or was considering it many years ago. Eastern half would go to school, western half would stay home. Let's just say that with all the complaining...no one actually wanted it and the initiative/proposal never passed. Loudoun also has no cap on snow days, so no worries about making up the days missed. I believe they get 15 and whatever happens after that happens.

It would be so impractical - many staff live on the “opposite” side of the county where they work, so they’d just call out if they had work and their kids didn’t have school.

I was wondering this too! The only waiver to the two week rule appears to be year round programs which does not apply to Loudoun. Does Loudoun not know they are in violation? Who do we report it to because I’d like to start a week later for a variety of reasons (not a teacher.) The school board is so incompetent.

It's twofold.

Not enough snow to invest in the type and numbers of equipment you'd get in a location that gets snow all winter and can quickly handle it.

Cultural expectation from people who have never lived anywhere with snow that it is not possible and/or safe to carry on with life with snow/ice. There are people who think it is unsafe to go outdoors or have children go outdoors if there is a chance of any snow or ice anywhere under their feet. I think this reason is the main driver.

There is also a calendar out for 2027-28 It goes August 19-June 14 for students and August 13-June 16. The school years are a week too long at minimum. In 2016 when Jonas dumped 20 inches on us we were out the entire week. Depending on how bad this one is that is easily possible- the temps will not be above 20 all week with lows at night 5-10 degrees . There will be NO melt a very hard time getting to secondary roads. If it’s in the 12+ range, it will be Friday at BEST and possibly all week. Our principal told us to take our laptops home today because grades have to be posted Wednesday and they seem to believe it’s likely we won’t be back by then. (LCPS teacher)

If we get that much snow in Arlington we’ll open 2 hours late Wednesday at the earliest
