Brown is insane. I was looking at a Linkedin for a Brown kid I know which led me down a rabbit trail of the Linkedin profiles for another dozen Brown kids and they all have a 4.0. Literally every one has this listed in their profile.

NYU stern grades on a curve, so while no one generally fails, its very hard to land an A.

jhu has significant grade inflation now. cornell still has grade delation

Davidson-grade deflation

My experience is most colleges have grade inflation. At my Ivy, where there are no A+s so the highest GPA is a 4.0, a 3.83 was needed for summa cum laude (top 5%) back in the late 90s. I looked it up and last year's threshold for summa cum laude was 3.96.

Most/all first and second year math, chemistry including ochem pchem, physics, bio etc for stem/engineering class is graded on a curve to B- or B. Kids will get Bs, Cs and Ds. They were used to getting straight As and near the top in their high school, but not anymore. Get used to it. They are not “special” anymore. I don’t think this is grade deflation just because not everyone getting As.

BU has a reputation for grade deflation. It’s more of a lack of grade inflation imho (Median GPA is 3.3 as opposed to 3.8 at some IVYs. ).

Grade deflation: UChicago, CMU, Swarthmore, Cornell

Grade inflation: Brown, Harvard, Yale, Amherst

UCs or at least Cal, Davis, UCSD have deflation in major prerequisites courses. Very common in STEM, Econ, and even some Poli Sci classes. Engineering , chemistry and physics seem to be the worst.

In general, what colleges have grade inflation or deflation? Maybe it’s partially based on major ? My friend’s daughter is in engineering at CMU and says there is grade deflation. Have heard and read that there is grade inflation at Brown and Harvard, in general? Any other examples ?
