There’s a difference in letting her DD figure it out and simply asking people if they’ve had experience in the same situation. Almost every post in the Travel forum is asking about other people’s experiences.

This is the issue. I was just there in September and we only waited about 20 minutes. But others I spoke with spent several hours in the customs line just a few days before. Then you have the unknown amount of time for security coming back into the airport.

Lisbon may be the worst airport in Europe to arrive into from the US - the immigration lines are incredibly unpredictable. If they move quick, she'd have at least a few hours in town. If not, abandon the plan and stay at the airport.

Since the 2nd flight is to Spain, they will clear passport control in Lisbon, and upon leaving the airport will clear customs (really just using the green door when exiting baggage claim area). When returning to the airport, there won't be passport control again because it's a flight to Spain, which is functionally a domestic flight, so just a standard security check. The checked bags will be directed to the 2nd flight and come out at baggage claim in Spain, so no issues there- this is different than how it works in the US, where you have to collect checked bags upon arriving into the country and then recheck them.

Not sure about security lines at Lisbon airport, but my experience at other European airports when taking domestic/Schengen flights without checking a bag is that 75 minutes before arrival is fine.



Yes—sorry! You’re right. I’m the pp and had a false memory of dealing with bags and customs at Lisbon airport. The issue was at a US airport, coming from overseas. Sorry to potentially confuse OP.

If going to a central area like Baixa, might as well take the Metro, cheaper and takes around 35 minutes, taxi probably similar time if any traffic. One way ticket about $2 and can pay with contactless.

It’s not super close to actual city, but they could go to gulbenkian museum and garden or oceanarium nearby or fronteira palace.
First choice is gulbenkian but I love museums and gardens.

That's a tough one bc it's a long time to sit at the airport but almost too short to go out since I assume she has to be back 2 hours before departure. That being said, the airport is close to Lisbon.

What is your daughter into? Food? Art? History? If it were me and it's daytime, I might make a lunch reservation at one of the Michelin restaurants and cab there and back (lunch is easier to get a spot). That may not appeal to most 22 year olds obviously!

DD who is 22, will have a 6 hour layover in Lisbon before flying to Spain. Has anyone left the airport and quickly explored the city in that amount of time? Are you allowed to do so? If you have, any recommendations as to make the most of your time there? Thank you!
