Duke and many ivy schools have 'unaffiliated' frats and these tend to be the most popular. Seems very common these days as schools have created stricter rules for on campus orgs. The frats just rebranded and moved off campus. So now there is little to no oversight at all...

I do realize that. College kids are adults and will have to make their own decisions. As a parent, I just want to make sure they have as much information as possible to feel comfortable with their choice and to provide guidance.

Sure, but who is paying for frat expenses, tuition and room and board. A parent can absolutely say that an underground, suspended frat is not acceptable if they are holding the purse strings. Come on.

At some schools, Richmond comes to mind, the underground fraternities are often the top-tier ones. Why would you hold your kid back from being popular as long as they aren't breaking any laws or putting themselves in danger?

“Can” and “will” are different paths. I want my child to make his own decisions. Mutual respect and trust means I can still support financially without trying to control his choices, while helping to get information that may inform his decision. If I find out anything that leads me to believe there are serious consequences I can choose to act differently.

Maybe if they are underground they can sexually assault each other more open and liberally. It's a step toward freedom...for the people not being abused

At W&M there are a couple underground frats and they just warn people not to join them but there aren't any real consequences. No different from any unauthorized student org.

Nowadays at many top schools, all the Frats have 2nd off-campus houses because the universities have started restricting what the on-campus Frats are allowed to do with parties and what not.

If the official Frat gets suspended for something, life seems to just continue without a blip at the off-campus house.

Yes, you can be expelled. Here are UVA’s policies. It’s a safety issue for students. https://studentaffairs.virginia.edu/subsite/pace/suspended-and-terminated-student-organizations

There's not a word in there about expelling students for joining an underground organization. It just says the university doesn't have formal relationships with those organizations or provide them resources. UVA is still a public school, and freedom of association still exists. Don't be tarted.

I looked at that site and didn’t see anything about being expelled or specifics consequences. I did see on one a mention of students being “referred to judiciary as appropriate.” That also seems to be in the incident that was an extreme situation.

Don't a lot of them at Boulder operate that way?

Are there typically any student consequences for joining a group that is not recognized by the IFC/University, when the chapter has been suspended but continues operating?
