I tell her to go if she can make it but if it's coming fast just try to not vomit in bed. Floor is easier to clean than bed.

Mine were good at 5. Harder from the top bunk. But my oldest has an easy vomit reflex. Sometimes middle of the night she would pull a weird one and walks to our room first on a different floor to tell us she had to vomit and I'm all "nooo just go to the bathroom". But she makes it almost all the time.

I don't think making it to the toilet is reasonable at 9. Maybe as a teen but honestly I had a sudden episode a month ago when I caught it in my hand and then managed to get a bin.Though I am surprised they didn't try to get it into something a trash bin usually that age they know the sensation of vomiting, but sometimes it just happens and it sucks.
In the future if you know they are sick give them a bucket

I always give my kids a bucket when they’re sick. They can usually aim for that and not make a complete mess. This started around age 4 or so.

However, last winter my 9 year old woke up sick in the middle of the night and tried to make it to the toilet. This resulted in a trail of vomit from her bed, down the hall and all over the bathroom floor including just outside the toilet! I would have preferred if she’d just stood up and puked in one spot. Cleanup would have been much easier! But she’s a kid and she was sick, so what can you do? That’s just life, I cleaned everything and brought her a ginger ale with a straw.

I taught my kids from maybe 2 years old onward that we throw up in toilet first, then trashcan, then sink. Accidents still happen, but they all knew that toilet was the preferred place. I also gave them all buckets to barf in overnight if they weren't feeling well and I rolled up rugs in their rooms just in case (wool rug + vomit is awful)

Oh, please don't be mad at them. Last year I had a bug that was so bad I could barely move and definitely could not run to the toilet.

When I was very young, I was in the hospital for a surgery and ended up throwing up on myself. I couldn't even get out of bed, and the nurse yelled at me for it. It was very upsetting for me.

It really depends on how suddenly and violently the urge to vomit comes on. Sometimes you get progressively more nauseated and you can strategically position yourself. Other times, projectile vomiting just erupts without much warning. I don’t think people naturally feel an urge to take off running; that comes from a desire to make as little of a mess as possible, which, in turn, comes from an understanding of how unpleasant it is to clean up vomit.

When your child is feeling better, impress upon them that although you understand that they can’t always make it happen, it’s 1000x better for you if they can confine their vomit to a bucket or toilet. They may need some coaching. Once kids start vomiting, they usually panic and freeze. It may not occur to them to hang out in the bathroom once they start feeling queasy, even before they actually start vomiting.

My kids are 5 and 7 and they can usually make it to the toilet. Though there are times that it sneaks up on them and they don't quite make it. If your son is sick and having trouble making it to the toilet, it might be worth it to give him a trash can or bucket or something to keep next to him.

Me again. The plastic bucket is great, because when they were little and had gastroenteritis or other viruses, I put it by their bed and all they needed to do was lean over. It's difficult to make it to the bathroom when you're feverish and have low blood pressure. You could fall and hurt yourself.

It's possible he didn't realize what was happening? Also, there are different types of illnesses to consider. You don't always have too much "notice" that you are about to throw up.

I'm sure you didn't love cleaning this up, but it can happen to even adults. If you are looking for people to tell you that a 4-year-old should be making it to the toilet so you can shame your 9-year-old into thinking they did something "wrong" when they were sick, YOU are the wrong one for looking for this info or feedback.

Have you taught him that he needs to run to the toilet to throw up?

Do kids make it to the toilet if they are sick and going to vomit? My kids don’t throw up that often so maybe it’s still a shock but my 9 year old just stood where he was and barfed. Wtf.
