My kid is a junior CS major at UMD. From NOVA. Chose it over WM, BU, Lehigh, Pitt, CWRU, Ohio St and UMN. Loves it. He was WL at UVA. He would have likely enrolled there if accepted.

Purdue and UMD are among the best engineering schools in the country. And engineering is the most competitive major there is today. It attracts the strongest students. In engineering, there really isn't a lot of difference in the quality of students applying to Purdue and Maryland compared to students applying to Stanford and Penn. There's a lot of overlap among applicants in this major. So it wouldn't be uncommon for someone that got into Purdue for engineering to also have gotten into various top 20 schools. And of course, most students will pick Duke or Northwestern for instance over Purdue or UMD - if price isn't a factor. But the difference among students in engineering is negligible. If you were accepted into Purdue engineering, you probably have lots of options.

Purdue and Maryland have the same quality of being an excellent option but also attainable for high stats kid. Kind of a hard combo to find.

We’re in Virginia so didn’t consider Maryland but DS applied to and was accepted to Purdue engineering. It was a very likely target for him and if nothing else breaks his way, we’d all be thrilled with Purdue.

I think that explains the yield.

great question - my kid feels the same way. She is now attending 2 colleges at the same time.

Almost all of the schools outside the top 20 see a majority of their admitted students not attend, and even some of those within the top 20. Seems you need to rephrase this question.

What exactly is the hype? You listed a couple or schools but what are the schools in your etc.?

My kid applied to 12 such state schools. They will attend one of them. I would be the world’s biggest hypocrite if I expected those schools to have yield rates over 8%.

And yet many kids will attend those schools.
