Not in the DMV, but Space Camp in Huntsville in absolutely amazing.

Fairfax County Parks Authority has "Astronomy Night" events roughly monthly in Great Falls area. These have larger telescopes so one can actually see - provided it is not cloudy.

Modest per person fee and advance registration are both required.

My 4th-grade DS loves Astronomy. He's deep into books, shows, videos, etc. Often way beyond what I can even follow. Are there any special classes, camps, etc., around the DMV where he could explore this further? Thanks!
